Sketches

The teenager is a pretty good sketch artist.  He just showed me some fish he's been working on.

EDITED:  Oh my gosh.  Cory was doubting these drawings, so we did a random room search.  They're tracings.  I thought about just taking this post down, but I think it's pretty typical for his age.  Now the question is (and I value your input), do you confront him and call him out on it??  The teenager is going to be the death of me.  :)

Those are awesome.

And I don't know... when a friend of mine was learning art in middle school, she started by tracing but still took the credit. ;) Then she moved to grids, and now she free hands. She's super talented but she did start by tracing. I say if he's interested, keep encouraging him to try different things- they have awesome "how to draw a dog", etc. books that start with a circle and you learn from there. The first step towards being a good artist is learning to draw and maybe he doesn't realize that's technically tracing, not drawing? Ah well. I say encourage the interest. It might just be the first step towards a lifelong hobby. :)

I think tracing is okay, maybe encourage him to then look at the picture and start adding some shading and more detail. As long as he is not trying to sell or show the work it is just fine :) It is very good practice, and he probably finds it very relaxing. Encourage his interest in drawing! Down the road, if he continues, then you could discuss originality, etc. That's my input!
