The Poisonwood Bible

Every once in awhile, there is a book that just gets you in the gut.  This one did for me.  Since I read it, several other friends have read it or considered reading it.  At Julie's suggestion, we're going to try an online book club for this book here, on Bits and Pieces in one month.  We'll use the bookclub questions written for this book.  Should be a great discussion...get reading!

Also, an update on what I've been reading:

Elegance of the Hedgehog, Muriel Baybery
Couldn't do it.  Got half way through before I gave up.  I like intellectual reads, but I'm not smart enough for this book.

Hundred Secret Senses, Amy Tan
Eh.  I'll probably finish it, but it's not holding my interest very well.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, JK Rowling
YAY!  I got books 1 - 6 from my sister and am half way through the first one. I think I am going to enjoy this series.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Stieg Larsson
LOVED it.  Can't wait to read the next two.

I will have to find that book! Not sure where I will find time, but I love the idea of a Online book club!

Amy is reading the 2nd Stieg Larsson book; she said it's really good. She laughed at me, because apparently I missed a major point in the first book that's continued on in the second. I definitely had to skip a few sections of the book because they were too intense, but I thought I read the rest of it.

I have to say that I tried Lonesome Dove, but got halfway through and quit. It just wasn't doing anything for me. I did read The Tender Bar, though, and loved it. Your mention of Jodi Picoult books prompted me to check a couple of hers out and I really enjoyed them.

When will we start? I'd love to be involved.

Tara - What Picoult books have you read? She's one of my favorites!

I just read "19 Minutes" and "My Sister's Keeper". I've also read "Perfect Match", "Plain Truth" (Loved that one), and a few others whose names escape me at the moment...

Oh, yes "Hedgehog" is far from a light read - I did muscle through and really enjoyed it (it got better the 2nd half, honest). I did like 'tattoo girl' but the violence rattled me so I'm (probably) skipping the next 2. I've noticed that violent or frightening images from books or movies/TV will pop into my head at odd times - yet these occurrances are extremely rare in 'real life' (how often do I imagine a car or house exploding .... nothing I've ever actually seen ...)
*loved* Poisonwood but would have to re-read to join a discussion - it's been awhile! Enjoying a great book right now: Shadow of the Wind.

I have not read The Poisonwood Bible, though I think it may be on my list (a ridiculously long thing). Hope your book club is a smashing success!
